Button Illumination no ignition

I have just bought a new noname unit from this site and it has been installed into a pre-canbus vehicle, so I am using a CANBUS emulator. Everything seems to work ok when I put the ignition on and turn it off. When I turn the unit on with the ignition off, i.e no key in, it powers up (expected). The buttons illuminate and the screen dims slightly (as if the head lights have been put on). If I turn the unit off, the screen goes off, but the buttons stay illuminated.
Any fix for this?
